The 1923 Sleep Protocol The Drug Industry Buried In 1938 (And Why Every American Hospital Still Uses It Today)

What a Jena clinic, the Apache tribe, Roman legion surgeons, the British royal household during the Black Death, NASA engineers, and one Polish military doctor all independently discovered — and the reason your doctor was trained not to know it.

By Dr. R. Bennett, MD • Integrative Medicine Specialist • 12 min read

A sanatorium ward in Jena, Germany, 1923. The doctor running this clinic walked 47 bedridden patients out of his ward in six weeks. Three years later he invented the EEG and became famous. The protocol that healed those 47 patients was buried by 1938.

In November 1923, A Woman Named Käthe Hoffman Walked Across A Sanatorium Floor For The First Time In Three Years.

She had been bedridden since 1920. Joint pain that nothing touched. Two senior doctors in Leipzig had told her family she would never walk again. A third had told them to keep her on morphine for the rest of her life.

On the fourth night of a new protocol at the Jena clinic, she swung her legs off the bed, stood up without help, and walked the length of the ward to the window.

The night nurse wrote in the log:

"Patient Hoffman walked unassisted. No pain reported. Stands alone for the first time since 1920."

She was patient 12 of 47 in a six-week experiment. All 47 of them got better. By the end of the program, 38 of them had been discharged from the sanatorium for good.

The protocol cost the clinic almost nothing to run. It used no drugs. The doctor running it would, three years later, invent the EEG and become famous around the world.

What he did with those 47 patients is what got erased from medical history.

The Doctor Who Walked 47 "Hopeless" Patients Out Of His Ward

His name was Hans Berger. The same Hans Berger who would invent the electroencephalogram in 1926 and prove for the first time that the human brain runs on measurable electrical signals.

But before any of that, Berger had been studying the human body's electrical activity for 20 years. He believed every cell in the body generated a small electrical charge as a byproduct of normal function. He believed that charge had a natural place to drain — the surface of the Earth itself, which carries a constant flow of free electrons.

He also believed modern beds, wooden floors, and leather shoes had cut human bodies off from that drain for the first time in 200,000 years of evolution.

So he tested it the simplest way he could.

He brought metal mesh beds into the ward. He connected each one with a copper wire to a grounding rod driven into the soil outside the sanatorium wall. He had his "hopeless" patients sleep on them. Every night. For six weeks.

Five of those 47 patients made it into his clinical notes by name:

🩺 Käthe Hoffman, 38 — bedridden 3 years. Walked unassisted on day 4.

🩺 Heinrich Bauer, 52 — factory worker disabled by chronic back pain. Back to full shifts inside a month.

🩺 Friedrich Lange, 41 — on chloral hydrate sleeping pills for 10 years. Slept 9 hours straight on night two without the pills.

🩺 Anna Vogel, 47 — schoolteacher whose hands had swollen shut. Wrote on a blackboard for an hour in week three.

🩺 Markus Weber, 14 — could not raise his arms above his shoulders. Threw a ball over the clinic wall in week five.

Berger wrote a single line in his notes that summed the whole experiment up:

"The body accumulates electrical charge with no outlet. Connect it to the earth and the charge drains. The healing follows automatically."

By 1928, clinics in Berlin, Vienna, Stockholm, and Munich were running their own versions of the protocol and reporting the same outcomes.

Then the research vanished.

In 1938 The Drug Industry Erased Berger From Every Medical Textbook In The World

The 1930s changed everything.

Bayer had just made aspirin the most profitable drug in human history. IG Farben, the German chemical conglomerate that absorbed Bayer in 1925, was building the biggest pharmaceutical empire Europe had ever seen. In America, the AMA was finalizing the standards every medical school would follow for the next century.

The future of medicine was patented chemicals you could manufacture and sell by the billion.

A metal bed connected to the ground was a threat.

You can't patent the Earth. You can't bill someone monthly for dirt. You can't build a billion dollar empire on something a small clinic can do with a copper wire and a bedframe.

So the research disappeared.

Berger's clinical notes on the sanatorium protocol were left out of his later EEG publications. The Berlin and Vienna studies were never translated into English. In 1938 the AMA removed every reference to silver, mineral therapy, and earth contact protocols from its standard teaching materials.

That same year, the first mass-produced antibiotic, sulfanilamide, went on the market.

⚠️ "If grounding really worked like that, my doctor would know about it."

Your doctor graduated medical school after 1938. The protocol that walked Käthe Hoffman out of bed was removed from the curriculum before they were born. They were never taught it existed.

It's not a conspiracy theory. The 1938 AMA curriculum change is documented archival history. Your doctor isn't hiding it. They genuinely don't know.

That's the entire point.

And Yet Every Civilization Before 1938 Had Already Figured It Out Independently

Here's the part that should make you furious.

Berger's 1923 protocol wasn't a new discovery. He had rediscovered something every advanced civilization on Earth had figured out on its own — thousands of years apart, with no contact between each other.

A sanatorium ward in Jena, Germany, 1923. The doctor running this clinic walked 47 bedridden patients out of his ward in six weeks. Three years later he invented the EEG and became famous. The protocol that healed those 47 patients was buried by 1938.

pre-1500s North America

Apache and Lakota tribes — pre-1500s North America

Slept on the ground on bison hides. Tribal medical records from early settler accounts show inflammatory disease rates so low that European doctors thought the records were faked. They weren't.

27 BC

Roman Legion surgeons

Embedded silver coins directly into open wounds before suturing them shut. They called silver "the metal that fights invisible enemies." Roman infection rates after battle were a fraction of every other army in the ancient world.

1300s BC

Egyptian pharaohs

Wrapped in silver-threaded linen bandages at burial. When Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb in 1923 — the same year Berger ran his experiment — the tissue under the silver-wrapped areas was still preserved. The rest of the body wasn't.

200 BC

Imperial Chinese emperors

Silver acupuncture needles were reserved exclusively for the emperor and the highest nobility. Commoners got copper or bronze. The ruling class measurably outlived everyone else.

1665

British royal household during the Black Death

Slept under silver-threaded brocade canopies. Ate from solid silver dining sets. When plague swept London and killed one in four people in the city, the royal household at Hampton Court Palace recorded almost no deaths.

1800s

American frontier doctors

Dropped silver coins into milk pails to keep the milk from spoiling. Used silver sutures and silver nitrate as their standard antiseptic before antibiotics existed.

None of these cultures shared notes. No internet. No medical journals. No common language. Five thousand years and three continents apart.

But every one of them figured out the same thing.

Silver, when it touched the body, did something nothing else could do.

Hospitals Still Do This. They Just Don't Recommend It For Sleep.

Walk into any hospital ICU in America right now. Grounding is everywhere.

✔ Every EKG machine grounds the patient before reading their heart

✔ Every EEG machine grounds the patient before reading their brain

✔ Every operating table grounds the patient for the entire surgery

✔ Every ICU bed is wired to the building's electrical ground

✔ Silver dressings go on burn patients when antibiotics fail

✔ Silver-coated catheters go in patients with stubborn infections

✔ Silver-impregnated bandages go on diabetic ulcers that won't heal

✔ Silver-coated breathing tubes go on ventilator patients

Ask any ICU nurse what they reach for when nothing else works. The answer is always silver. Every time.

But your doctor will never tell you to sleep grounded at home.

"Treatment is profitable. Prevention is not. An ICU stay costs $45,000 to $120,000 a patient. Preventing that stay with a grounded sheet at home brings in zero dollars."

Why Silver — And Not Anything Else

In 1867, French chemist Paul Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran published the first complete electrical conductivity rankings of every metal on the periodic table.

Silver came in first. Not gold. Not copper. Silver.

📊 Electrical Conductivity Of Metals

Silver has 47 electrons. The outermost one moves between atoms with almost zero resistance. That's what makes it the most electrically conductive natural element on Earth.

That conductivity is why hospitals use silver on the patients who matter most. It's also why silver — and only silver — can transfer Earth electrons into the human body when woven into the right fabric at the right density.

⚠️ The right density matters as much as the right metal.

This is where almost every grounding sheet on the market fails. Silver oxidises when it touches moisture, and the human body sweats every night. At low silver percentages, the threads are too thin to survive the oxidation. The sheet looks fine. On a multimeter it reads zero. Most buyers never know.

📊 Silver Content By Brand — What You're Actually Buying

BrandSilver ContentLifespan In Normal Use

Earthing Harmony5%Cord rusts inside 2 weeks
The Grounding Co10%Dead in roughly 8 washes
Terra10% (sprayed coating)Coating peels by wash 3
Grounding of Sweden25% woven through every thread97% conductivity after 500 washes

The other categories on the market — plastic mattress covers laced with sparse carbon, stainless steel fiber sheets at 8-12% steel content — don't even use silver. Carbon is a much weaker conductor than silver. Stainless steel is roughly 30 times weaker. Neither of them at those low densities can transfer electrons into the body through any layer of fabric on top, which is why those products require direct skin contact and still underperform.

The only sheet on the market with enough silver, at the right density, woven through every thread — is Grounding of Sweden.

NASA Tested 23 Materials In 1967. Only Silver Worked.

NASA had a problem. How do you keep water safe to drink on a spacecraft for months at a time?

They tested 23 different methods. Chlorine evaporates in zero gravity. Filters clog. UV light needs power they didn't have.

Silver beat all 23.

Silver ions killed 99.9% of pathogens within 90 seconds. No taste. No smell. No toxic byproducts.

Since 1967, every NASA spacecraft has used silver to purify its water. The International Space Station uses silver today.

When NASA needs something to work without fail in the most hostile environment imaginable, they use silver. Not carbon. Not steel. Silver.

The Polish Military Doctor Who Brought Berger's Finding About Grounding Back Into Scientific Researc

For most of the 20th century, what Berger documented in Jena sat untouched in German archives. No drug company wanted to fund research on a treatment they couldn't sell.

In 2011, Dr. Karol Sokal, a Polish military physician, published a study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine titled "Earthing the Human Body Influences Physiologic Processes."

Sokal had spent two decades running what was essentially Berger's protocol with modern instruments.

The findings:

✔ Blood viscosity dropped within hours of grounded contact

✔ Cortisol normalized across a 24-hour cycle for the first time in his test subjects

✔ Inflammatory markers fell measurably in patients with chronic joint conditions

Sokal's paper ended with one sentence that summed up two decades of his work:

"Earthing revealed significant curing and preventive effects with a shorter illness duration."

Dr. Karol Sokal, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2011

Other researchers picked up the work. Studies followed at California Pacific Medical Center, the University of California Irvine, and the Developmental and Cell Biology Research Group there. Every single one found the same pattern.

A body that sleeps grounded recovers faster, sleeps deeper, and ages slower than a body that sleeps electrically isolated.

Berger had been right in 1923. It took the rest of the world 88 years to publish a paper confirming what one German doctor had already proven on 47 patients.

And Here's The Reason None Of This Helps You Yet

For 200,000 years humans walked barefoot and slept on the ground. Their bodies were in constant contact with the surface of the Earth — and the surface of the Earth is loaded with free electrons.

Then in 1839, Charles Goodyear vulcanized rubber.

Within fifty years, rubber soles replaced leather. Synthetic mattresses replaced straw. Wooden floors went up over packed dirt. Concrete cities replaced soil paths. Beds went onto steel frames in apartments on the 14th floor of skyscrapers built on insulating concrete foundations.

For the first time in human history, the average person was electrically isolated from the planet they lived on. 24 hours a day. Every day of their life.

By the year 2000, the average person in a developed country was touching the Earth for about 12 minutes a week.

<2%

27

peer-reviewed studies since 2007 confirming grounding reduces inflammation

The mechanism isn't in question anymore inside the research community. The only question left was how to reconnect a modern body to the Earth without making people sleep on dirt.

That's what a family of textile engineers in Sweden solved in 2017.

What 200,000 Years Of Disconnection Costs You Every Night — And How To Get 8 Hours Of It Back

The Swedish team started from one observation.

Every modern home, by building code, has an electrical ground that runs to a copper rod buried in the earth outside the foundation. That rod connects to the same electron field Berger was tapping into with his metal mesh beds in 1923.

The third hole on every electrical outlet in the world connects to that rod.

The question was the conductor. Silver is the most electrically conductive element on Earth — but silver wears out.

Almost every grounding sheet on the market uses 3% to 10% silver. At those densities the body's sweat and washing machine water oxidise the silver threads within a few washes. The sheet looks identical. The multimeter reads zero. Dead.

The Swedish team spent four years engineering a fabric that wouldn't die.

They settled on 25% pure silver woven through every single thread of 500 thread count organic cotton. Three to eight times more silver than any other sheet on the market. Woven into every fibre instead of sprayed on the surface, so the silver can't wash off.

They sent the finished sheets to an independent textile lab for accelerated wash testing.

The lab measured 97% conductivity after 500 washes.

That is the only grounding sheet on the market that has ever passed that test.

And because the silver density is so high, the sheet conducts electrons through anything you wear or sleep under — pajamas, a t-shirt, a layered sheet on top. The cheap 5% silver sheets, the plastic mattress covers laced with carbon, and the stainless steel sheets at 8-12% steel fiber can't do this. They don't have the conductive density to push electrons through a layer of fabric. This sheet does.

The brand is called Grounding of Sweden.

What Happens Once You Plug Your Body Back Into The Earth At Night

N1
Nights 1 to 3 · Deeper Sleep
Most people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer right away. Vivid dreams are common the first week. The nervous system is shifting out of fight-or-flight for the first time in years.
W1
Week 1 · Waking Up Different
Morning grogginess starts to lift. People describe waking up actually rested for the first time in years. Cortisol starts dropping at night the way it's supposed to.
W2
Weeks 2 to 3 · The Stiffness Softens
Joint stiffness in the morning eases off. Chronic low-grade inflammation starts to settle. Fewer headaches, return of physical energy in the afternoon.
M1
Month 1 · The Body Stops Feeling Older Than It Is
3pm energy crashes start disappearing. Less coffee. Sharper mental clarity. The change is obvious enough that you notice it the first time you sleep somewhere else without it.
M3
Month 3 · The New Baseline
By 90 days the change is locked in. The body has rebuilt its electrical baseline around grounded sleep. This is why the trial is 90 nights, not 30. Three months is when the change becomes permanent.

Common Questions

Is it safe to plug a sheet into a wall outlet?

Yes. The cord connects only to the third hole on the outlet — the ground port. It carries zero electricity. It connects to the copper grounding rod outside your home. You're plugging into the Earth, not into your home's electricity.

Does it work through pajamas or my normal bed sheets on top?

Yes. The 25% silver density is high enough to conduct through cotton, linen, polyester, nylon — anything you wear or layer on top. That's why we put in 25% silver instead of 5%. Cheap sheets don't conduct through fabric because they don't have enough silver. This one grounds you in pajamas, in a t-shirt, even with another sheet on top.

How will I know it's still working months from now?

A multimeter ships free with every order. You can test the conductivity yourself any night, the same way the lab tested it. If the reading ever drops, the lifetime warranty replaces the sheet for free.

Will the silver wash out over time? No. The silver is woven into every thread as part of the fibre structure. It's not a coating that can wash off. The lab confirmed 97% conductivity at wash 500. Most people get many years of use from a single sheet.

How long until I notice a difference?

Most people feel deeper sleep within the first 3 to 7 nights. Pain and inflammation usually change inside 2 to 4 weeks. The full effect takes 6 to 12 weeks. That's why the trial is 90 nights.

Will it work if my partner shares the bed?

Yes. Both people get grounded at the same time. The silver weave conducts across the whole sheet.

What if I have a memory foam mattress, or a sleep number, or an adjustable bed?

Any mattress works. The sheet sits on top like any fitted sheet. The mattress underneath doesn't matter because the conductive surface is on top against your skin.

I have a pacemaker. Is this safe for me?

The sheet doesn't put electricity into your body. It lets accumulated charge drain into the Earth. It's safe with medical devices, but check with your doctor if you have any specific concerns.

The Choice You Have Tonight

Berger figured this out in 1923. The drug industry erased it in 1938. NASA proved silver was the only material that worked in 1967. Sokal got the science back into a peer-reviewed journal in 2011. A family in Sweden built the only sheet that delivers it in 2017.

Over 1 million people are sleeping on one tonight.

The only question left is how many more mornings you're going to wake up the way you've been waking up.
